In order to provide better corrosion resistance, particularly chloride stress corrosion and chloride pitting corrosion, the Duplex Steel Round Bar are designed to provide greater strength than standard austenitic stainless steels.
The most commonly used duplex (ferritic / austenitic) grade of stainless steel is duplex 2205. A nitrogen-enhanced duplex alloy of stainless steel is the Duplex 2205 alloy. Nitrogen is used to significantly improve the alloy ‘s corrosion resistance , especially in the welded state.
Unfortunately, its machinability is limited by the high strength that makes these Duplex Steel Round Bar useful in many applications. The cutting speed is about 20 per cent slower than that of grade 304. The strength of Duplex 2205 also makes it more difficult to bend and form; requiring equipment of greater capability than for austenitic stainless steels.
In addition to high strength and excellent impact toughness, Alloy 2205 is a 22 percent chromium, 3 percent molybdenum, 5-6 percent nickel nitrogen alloyed duplex stainless steel with high general, localised and stress corrosion resistance properties.
In almost all corrosive environment, the Duplex Steel Round Bar offers pitting and crevice corrosion resistance superior to austenitic SS. It also has elevated fatigue properties of corrosion and degradation as well as lower thermal expansion and greater thermal conductivity than austenitic.
The yield power is roughly twice that of stainless austenitic steels. This helps a manufacturer to conserve weight and, as opposed to 316L or 317L, makes the alloy more cost-effective.
For applications covering the temperature range of -50 degree F/+600 degree F, Duplex Steel Round Bar is particularly suitable. It is possible to consider temperatures outside this range, but some restrictions are required, particularly for welded structures.
The high standard 2205 alloy Chromium, Molybdenum and Nickel content gives it a high PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) of 35.8, thus improving its resistance to corrosion. The AL 2205 alloy PREN exceeds that of the SS 316L and SS 317L. The composition of the AL 2205 alloy produces a microstructure that consists of a nearly equal mixture of austenite and ferrite phases when heat-treated properly.
