To make it corrosion resistant, chromium is added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Different classes of stainless steel can be made by altering the amounts of these elements, each with its own set of characteristics. And, because the proportions can be modified in a variety of ways, there are an almost infinite number of grades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stainless steels are divided into four groups to make things easier: austenitic (300 series), martensitic (400 series), precipitation hardenable (17-4PH, 455), and ferritic (500 series) (430, 443). Because stainless steel contains just over 10% chromium, a thin layer of chromium oxide forms on the material&#8217;s outer surface. When exposed to oxidation or other corrosion-causing chemical reactions, this efficiently inhibits corrosion or degradation.
