Nature is austenitic. Stainless steel 317 is a high-alloy, while Stainless Steel 317L is a lower-carbon version. For higher corrosion resistance, 317L contains more chromium, nickel, and molybdenum than 316L. Sulfurous, acetic, formic, citric, or tartaric acids will not affect this steel, and it will not pit when exposed to phosphorous acid, chlorides, bromides, or iodides.

To preserve resistance, Stainless Steel 317 Pipes are hot produced and then dipped in an annealing solution. With additions of 0.03 Carbon, 0.75 Si, 2.0 Manganese, 0.03 Sulfur, 0.040 Phosphorous, 3.0-4.0 Molybdenum, chromium 18.0-20.0, Nickel 11.0-15.0, N 0.10, 317L stainless steel welded pipe has a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa and minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, hardness of 95 max for Rockwell B, hardness of 217 max for Brinell (HB) and elongation in 35% in 50mm. Because it contains an additional nitrogen layer in its chemical structure, stainless steel 317 L is dual certified. The welding process in Stainless Steel 317L can be attempted effectively without fear of interannual corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation.
