Alloy 316 plates (UNS S31600/S31603) is a chromium-nickel molybdenum austenitic stainless steel intended to improve corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive settings over Alloy 304/304L. At cryogenic temperatures, Alloy 316L Plates give exceptional strength and hardness. The reduced carbon chemistry of 316L, along with the addition of nitrogen, allows it to fulfill the mechanical properties of 316 plates. When annealed, alloy 316 is nonmagnetic; however, cold treatment or welding can make it somewhat magnetic. It's simple to weld and process using typical shop fabrication methods. In phosphoric and acetic acids, alloy 316 plates are also resistant to pitting. It performs brilliantly in boiling 20 percent phosphoric acid. In the food and pharmaceutical processing industries, the alloy is also used to handle heated organic and fatty acids to prevent product contamination. In most corrosive conditions, the corrosion resistance of Alloys 316 and 316L Plates will be essentially equivalent. Because of their low carbon content, alloy 316L plates should only be utilized in environments that are sufficiently corrosive to cause intergranular corrosion of welds and heat-affected zones.
